CLMSC holds a yearly snowmobile safety course. This class is a great way for novice sledders
to learn snowmobile safety
The Cranberry Lake Mountaineers Snowmobile Club was formed late in the 1980s. The club was
formed as the interest in snowmobiling started to increase, with many new models of snowmobiles
produced, such as the Yamaha Phazer and Polaris Indy. Yamaha, Polaris, Skidoo, and Arctic Cat,
known as "The Big 4” and a few other manufacturers, sparked an interest in snowmobiling.

CLMSC has done numerous activities over the years to promote snowmobiling, for example: a Yamaha
sponsored event (Yamafest) and Poker Runs used to draw crowds of 150 to 200 people.

Since then, the CLMSC sponsored the event and named it Winter Weekend. At this time, the only trail
markers were objects nailed to trees; no matter what it was, (Remember the John Deere sign or
Johnny’s flywheel). This was also a time before grooming as we know it today. Before grooming,
Cranberry Lake to Dumas’s (Thirsty Moose) was a long trip.

Early in the 1990s, the club brought oval and drag racing to the lake.

CLMSC works together with other clubs and the St. Lawrence County Snowmobile Assoc. In making
the trail system that you ride today.
